Advancing Children's Health

Houston apartment communities are helping parents and children with the new CHIP Program.

People in the apartment business know better than anyone: Insurance is expensive. Thousands of Texas families and children live without health insurance. As a result, the children lose out on the medical care that will help them grow into healthy adults.

Houston area apartment owners and managers are reaching out to the families on their properties to help them take advantage of the new Children's Health Insurance Program.

In conjunction with the 100% Campaign, HAA and the Children's Defense Fund of Texas have joined forces to teach apartment managers and staff about how their residents can benefit from free and low-cost health coverage through CHIP and Children's Medicaid. The goal is to reach out to thousands of working families that will benefit from the new rules.

Childrens Defense Fund staff have trained community managers how to complete the necessary paperwork to apply for benefits. Managers are taking the next step and taking that knowledge back to their apartment communities to show residents how to apply.

CDF employees are visiting apartment communities throughout the Houston region to talk about the new rules and to help individuals enroll their children in the program.

About Our Involvement

HAA is a new partner of the Children's Defense Fund. This outreach effort to HAA members is part of the 100% Campaign, a year-long enrollment campaign to enroll all eligible Houston children in low-cost health coverage through CHIP and Children's Medicaid.

We hope that property managers will help inform parents about new policy changes approved by the Texas Legislature that simplifies the CHIP enrollment process. The vast majority of children who need this program live in rental housing. Because our member properties provide homes to more than half of Houston families, we have the ability to make a tremendous difference.

We can reach thousands of families that will benefit from these programs for working families. CHIP will help parents provide much-needed health care to their children and give them peace of mind without having to sacrifice other basic necessities. I strongly encourage you to take part in this important initiative.
