experienced before. Its a very exciting field and a fantastic industry.

Debbie Brueckner, CAS,
Dixie Carpet Installations
- How long have they been active in the industry? Ever worked on the mgmt side? I've been at Dixie Carpet for the 15 years, the only company I've worked for in the apartment industry.
- How long have you served on the council? Gee, off and on for the 15 years. I took a few years off in the middle as I'm on the board in Beaumont and PSC there,
and the scheduling would conflict. But I missed Houston's PSC, so couldn't stay gone too long!
- Who do you sell to? Who is your customer? Carpet selections are made by maintenance, managers, or the corporate office....depending on the company.
After the selections are made, we continue to work with all the staff for scheduling, special request and etc.
- What committee/club are you working on in HAA? I currently co-chair The Business Exchange Committee.... which is an amazing opportunity to meet many corporate
executives in one place, and having time to actually introduce yourself and your company. I'm also on the Expo
committee. I like to work on the ladies golf outing, the food drive and the school supply drive. Many opportunities
to give back to the community.
- Why do you work in this industry? What keeps you passionate about it? I absolutely love the people in the industry. You get to build business relationships that become close to your heart.
We spend so much time at work that it is wonderful to work with people you grow to love. It's a win-win for
everyone.

Peggy Charles, Meyer Smith Inc.
- How long have they been active in the industry? I have been active for 16 years and have never been on the mgmt. side.
- How long have you served on the council? This is my eighth year on the council.
- Who do you sell to? Who is your customer? On the service side of Meyer Smith Inc., I deal with managers, asst. managers, maintenance and occasionally supervisors. If it is a large rehab project, supervisors, maintenance supervisors and occasionally VP & owners. Also on large rehabs I deal with general contractors and project managers.
- What committee/club are you working on in HAA? Being involved with as many HAA committees has been a good part of my success in this industry. I would advise all new vendors to do the same. Ambassadors is a must for new vendors (in my opinion). Sports Challenge, Women Golf, Chili Cook off, Expo, Community Outreach, PSC - education subcommittee, Century Club.
- Why do you work in this industry? What keeps you passionate about it? Working in this industry is like having one big family. Once you have made friends you keep them for years. People may move to a different company or move up in the company but rarely do they go out of the industry. Often the ones that leave come back because they miss the friendship that this industry has to offer. I think that is what keeps me passionate about the multifamily industry because owners and management are always changing (buying/selling/building) and I love change. Though all the changes the people remain the same, one big family. HAA, with all their events, makes it easy to get in front of the people you want to meet.

Arrie Colca, CASE,
Craven Carpet
- How long have they been active in the industry? 15yrs
- Ever worked on the mgmt side? Back in 1973 I worked for Westchase Corporation in Accounting and was in charge of the books for 4 properties. Did this for about 2.5 years and decided it wasn’t exciting enough for me…….That was when I thought it would be a great idea to be a CPA, back then we did double entry bookkeeping and used a 10 key.
- How long have you served on the council? 11 years
- Who do you sell to? Any one that will buy…just kidding, Multi-family, commercial, residential.
- Who is your customer? Really all of them, including the gate-keeper. You have to be able to work Corporate and Managers without usurping the Manager’s position, and if the Maintenance person is not happy he makes the Manager miserable so you really need to be able to sell to all three. They each deserve respect and attention.
- What committee/club are you working on in HAA? HAABG, PSC, EXPO, Chili, Community Out Reach (other sub-committees fall under this one) and Education. Think that is it
- Why do you work in this industry? I absolutely love this industry…. Where else can you be of service to so many and make so many friends. It’s a way of life, you can earn a great living and enjoy making new friends and learn so darn much.
- What keeps you passionate about it? Everything and everyone I come in contact with – there are new challenges every day that keep you on your toes and your mind working. There is never a dull moment. I feel truly blessed to have the position that I have and be in contact with the people that I come in contact with on a daily basis. This job, this industry is truly a blessing from God that I am so thankful to be a part of.

The Urban Forester
- How long have they been active in the industry? Ever worked on the mgmt side? have been active in HAA since 2005. I had a short off period where I launched my own business, but quickly regrouped and was back in the game
- How long have you served on the council? 2012 is my first year on PSC, so I am very excited to get started helping people.
- Who do you sell to? Who is your customer? For small projects we sell directly to the on-site staff and managers, but for whole property trimming contracts, we are often working direcly with owners or with owner's representatives who are putting together a large scale rehab. We also serve many of the vendor members such as landscape companies that do not have tree pruning and removal capabilities in house.
- What committee/club are you working on in HAA? I am active on the Ambassador Club and with Century Club.
- Why do you work in this industry? What keeps you passionate about it? Managers in this industry have a lot on their plate. I look at this as an opportunity to help people in an area that they usually get very little support. Helping people is the name of the game in all of business success. I'm just passionate in general about what we do, how I support my family and how our business adds to the overall fabric of the Houston Apartment Association. One thing I enjoy most about my business is being viewed as an expert in my field.

The multi-family industry is the largest "family" on earth...and is very likely we have shared all aspects of our lives through births, deaths and disasters...and anything in between. I have the privilege of working with people, I care about. This enables me to stay motivated to do my best, thus motivates my team into providing their very best to our clients...our extended family. I think our success comes not so much from what we do in our job, but how well we do it...and who we are taking along for the ride.

the industry? I have been in the multifamily
industry 28 years. Early on, I got involved in the association by attending
trade shows and education events.
-
Ever worked on the mgmt side? Yes. I started on site as an Assistant Manager and worked
my way up to a Property Supervisor, earning my CAPS in 1997
-
How long have you served on the
council? This is my third year serving on the council
-
Who do you sell to? Who is your
customer? I consider myself to be a consultant
rather than a sales person. I am a vendor partner who provides goods and
services to the multifamily owner/manager in with a focus in Texas. My company
services at every level of customer from on -site, management executives, owners,
institutional owners and REITS in 21 key markets across the US (and growing).
-
What committee/club are you working
on in HAA? Currently I serve as Treasurer
on the PCS, Ambassador Club Co-Captain, Community Outreach, Resident Relations,
BGF and Expo along with several sub committees.
-
Why do you work in this industry? After 28 year you think I would be tired of this
industry. Well that is not the case with me at all. This industry continually
changes with style, demographics, services, people, laws, etc. It has been my
chosen career field for most of my adult life. I did not attend college with
multifamily in mind and I’d bet, if you asked around, most of us that serve on
the PSC did not start out thinking of working in the multifamily industry as a
career choice. I cannot think of anything more stable and flexible all at the
same time. It has definitely been an amazing ride. By the way, it’s not work
it’s NETwork
- What keeps you passionate about it? The people…this is a wonderful platform to serve
other and to make a difference!

Brenda Nite, Crestmark Construction Services
- How long have they been active in the industry? Ever worked on the mgmt side? All together I have been active in the apartment industry for 25 years. I was in management for 31/2 years in California in the early 70’s. I got back in to the industry here in Houston 22 years ago as a vendor.
- How long have you served on the council? I have served on the council for 9 years I believe.
- Who do you sell to? Who is your customer? I sell to corporate, managers and maintenance.
- What committee/club are you working on in HAA? I am on the Ambassadors, Expo Committee, Century Club, CCDC, Community Outreach, and I have also served on the Chili Committee for many years.
- Why do you work in this industry? What keeps you passionate about it? I work in this industry because I love it and the people who work in it. Even though we live in a city with millions of people, our industry is like living in a small town. Everybody knows everybody. I grew up in a small town so I feel very much at home. Having been on both sides of the desk gives me a very clear understanding of the responsibilities of owners, supervisors, managers and maintenance staff. We are dealing with peoples homes and that is very personal. As a vendor, we have to deliver what they need to take care of their customer’s homes. It is a relationship business and I am a relationship person so it has been perfect for me.

I am from a small town and HAA feels "just like home". The work is challenging and ultimately I know that I may change someone's life by helping them start their career!
"What keeps me passionate is helping a new member get their start. To quote many before me, "you will only get out of this what you put in". So many have helped me and I am glad to "pay it forward"!
Don't expect every customer to rush to you because you have just joined. You have to show up and participate! Remember, you are the new kid on the block and people need to get to know you.
You can't do it all nor would you. But a few well-chosen activities and committees will ensure your success! There are many that will be glad to assist so don't be afraid to ask!
