Pools, beaches, lakes and rivers, oh my! The blistering hot Texas summer months are upon us and more families will be swimming and taking a relaxing plunge in the warm waves. But, water-related activities can be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken by children, parents, properties owners and managers. Before jumping into the water this summer, think safety first.
The Center for Disease Control reports each year over 3,400 people drown in the United States. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental deaths for persons 1to 14 years of age and the sixth leading cause for all ages. This year alone there have been at least eleven child drownings in Texas, eight of which have occurred in the Greater Houston area.
The Houston Apartment Association partners with the YMCA of Greater Houston to hold an annual Water Wise, Apartment Splash program dedicated to teaching swimming skills to area apartment communities.
Highlights of the Apartment Splash program include:
- Six YMCA swim instructors visit area properties to teach basic swim instruction and water safety to residents one hour a day for one week.
- Teams visit four different apartments weekly. The swim lessons are provided to all children who show up for the lessons.
- The cost of the program is $650 per property.
- Parents are trained to ensure responsible adults are watching their children in the water at all times.
